turning l

September 26, 2010 Leave a comment
Until August, never had I campaigned like I have, I am and will continue to, probably until the clock strikes midnight on Saturday, October 2nd, 2010. Why? Most Nigerians might have a clue. On Friday, October 1st, 2010, Nigeria is turning the big L – she’s going to clock 50 years! Now, I don’t know whether to say it has only been 50 years since her independence from England; or, in just 50 years, the Government has managed to take the Country from hero to zero, but I do hope one day, she’ll actually rise again.

I have been writing about, calling people about and promoting the special buttons collection I had designed specifically for this event…as well as the annual best-sellers. My tag line has been: “Celebrate this once in a lifetime with Family, Friends and Well-Wishers the Pearl Kreations-Style…by purchasing our unique and affordable Collection”.

Nia P* as usual has also been very helpful in promoting the buttons via Facebook and email. She sent a Facebook message to the Nigerian Community on Sunday morning even, and I asked her to send an email later tonight.I contacted the Nigeria at 50 Organization, but as usual, non-Nigeria-based Companies aren’t given exclusive contracts. I wish they’ll just stop it already ‘cos Pearl Kreations is missing out on a ton of opportunities! I really have to start the Nigerian registration in November as planned…unfailingly!

Luckily, the specific Nigeria-based youths we contacted for a one-time Partnership opportunity with Pearl Kreations (for this event) have generated a significant profit for us in Nigeria; as well as made themselves a lot of money in doing so! Not to sound greedy lol, but it’s nothing close to what I envisioned…if only The SKA Group was presently licensed in Nigeria *sigh*.

Oh well, I decided to move on and shifted my focus to a different market. I started by reaching out to the regional Canada-based Communities, but I got the same reluctant vibe. Even the Nigerian Community here in Ontario isn’t as responsive as I had hoped they would be – with them, I started my pitching as early as August so as not to spring the idea on people. I did my follow-up, but all I kept getting was “…great idea, we will get back to you”. One association even went as far as to order 100 buttons about two weeks ago, but as soon as it was time for payment, their Rep stopped responding. Now, suddenly, the all the executives are MIA. Thank goodness, I set up the “Production after Payment” Policy, or else, I would be one very sad Business owner right now.

Anyway, I got my elder sister in the States involved with the buttons collection. She already has a joint venture with me under Suave Clothing – the commemorate cufflinks, but I wanted the button sales to flow too! Last week, she gave me a hook up over the phone. So apparently, she was offered and bought a space at one of the venues of Nigeria’s 50th Celebration in Texas. And for those who don’t know, Maryland and Texas is home to approximately 75% of the Nigerian-American community. That is a big deal! She offered to help me sell buttons at the event and send the proceeds back to me. In order to help her focus on the cufflinks and her products, I decided to design a poster. I figured she could post them around her table/kiosk and the poster will do all the advertising. All she’ll have to do is attend to those who want buttons. Last night, I had 100 different Nigeria-themed buttons ready for shipping. Before posting them to her this afternoon, I printed a few of the posters and sent them with some of the new complimentary cards. Here is the poster:

I even designed three (3) posters advertising the cufflinks for her as well, but she’ll have print as many as she’ll want herself. I just attached the designs and sent them to her via email. I feel I should publicize the cufflinks too…after all, she’s my sister and it is a joint venture lol. There are three (3) of them: coat of arms, flag, and i-rep. I like the last best:

After first, I was reluctant to embark on the venture because they are $70.00/pair. Therefore, they are for a market not likely to be reading The SKA Blog…presently. I know a few people who would buy them though. They are however selling in the States though :-). If you’re Nigerian or well-wisher and reading this, purchase one, a few, some or the entire buttons collection today for yourself, family and friends! Celebrate this Friday’s unique occasion in an exceptionally inexpensive way…order yours today via email, online or Facebook.

Amidst all this, I still haven’t decided if I’ll be home watching the celebrations on CNN or selling the buttons at an Nigerian Association’s event somewhere in Ontario. The former is more likely.

I hope, I pray this hustling wont be in vain and pays off! lol

HAPPY 50TH NIGERIA!

ska redefined 2010

September 21, 2010 6 comments

Not too long ago, I embarked on a project to redefine myself. Have I succeeded? Well, so far, so good! Recently, I thought, why not redefine and pep up the company a little bit as well. After all, it is as much a part of me as my limbs. So, after long hours spent updating and redoing the company’s information and presentation, it was ready by morning. I took the documents to my lawyer, Philip O* in the afternoon, and a few minutes later, it was registered! You are about to read about The SKA Group Inc (as of 2010).

Note, I tapped into the futuristic ideology of the deja vu post! As I said earlier, this is as of 2010 so there are some “changes” lol; I don’t have Richard Branson as a mentor for nothing!

The company revolutionizing business and service through its ethics and expertise expressed through its numerous firms worldwide.
The SKA Group is one of the largest, privately-owned conglomerates in the world. It owns and oversees the operations of over seven subsidiaries and businesses with branches all over the world in the following fields: advertising, branding, clothing, education, financial services, publication and real estate. Reporting legitimate annual profits in excess of about US$110 million with over 2,000 dedicated people in employment worldwide, The SKA Group is undoubtedly one of the most admired and profitable Companies in the world.

History
The SKA Group was founded in Canada by Sylvester Kay-Adade in 2008. It initially began operations as Pearl Kreations (now, one of its Subsidiaries) on Monday, January 28th, 2008 in Hamilton, Ontario.

As Pearl Kreations grew, he diversified into other markets, thereby giving rise new Companies- Suave Clothing and Sylver Productions. Those were soon followed by SKA Ventures and others.

In January 2010, The SKA Group was set up to manage all the ventures and potential businesses. It became a registered Conglomerate incorporated in Canada under the laws of the Province of Ontario in September 2010 with most of its Subsidiaries fully functional at the time. By December 2010, barely three (3) years since its inception in January 2008, it had made over US$1 million in revenue with a vibrant work force of about 100 people; thus making it not only one of the most profitable, but also one of the fastest growing Companies in the world.

I stayed up one night sketching logos for the subsidiaries as well as the colors to be used. These are the sketches:

A couple of days later, I got in contact with Najim Z*. He’s a close colleague that’s talented in designing (there was an Inspitories on him in July). He designed my very first business cards and The SKA Group logo. This time, I gave him eight (8) new challenges to conquer. And after about three (3) weeks, some tweaking and editing, this is what we have:

Other Companies & Ventures
The major businesses that The SKA Group has partial ownership in are:

C’est fini!

I’m very happy and satisfied. Of course, all these modifications and additional logos meant I had to redo The SKA Group’s outlining document and that I did (for 2 hours)!

Earlier on in the year, I paid for the address: theska-group.com. I had to use that because theskagroup.com, skagroup.com, skag.com etc were all taken by random people with either boring, uncreative websites or stupid, one-paged websites. I was so upset…I think I still am. At least, I found something I could use. I’m considering changing the address to skagroupinc.com soon.

Anyway, after modifying the document, I decided to develop the website! I spent a whooping 8 hours on it 😦 and right now, it’s 3/4 ready! Please check it out the mock site anytime. It has basically the same info as is on here, but organized on to different pages. There is also now a twitter account and a Facebook page for the most active businesses.

The only thing I’m still undecided on is if to have just two of the subsidiaries should be traded on the stock market or none; and just remain entirely private 0_0. Well, after all, there are Companies like Cargill and Koch Industries – both privately owned and make over US$100M in revenue annually. One thing for sure is they will all operate independently, but will be monitored and regulated by the Group which will be controlled by the President, yours truly 😉

I just might make this an annual thing. I have a feeling things will keep evolving.

inspitories ix: breakthrough

September 14, 2010 Leave a comment

Inspitories is my made up word for inspirational stories on young people I find interesting. They are usually interviews of other Entrepreneurs like myself whom I have had the pleasure of meeting, stumbled upon online or dug up that motivate me. Enjoy and get inspired!

This is one of the most enterprising and innovative people I’ve ever met.
There’s always something brewing in Augusta’s mind.

I met her in October 2004 and we’ve remained close ever since. Every birthday card she gave me always had a peculiar smiley face in it. I thought it was some sort of signature. I must say, I never noticed her true creativity until after I moved to Canada in 2006. She sent me a proposal late that year for a column I could have in a new magazine she was working on. I was to talk about life overseas and portray it as not all fun and rainbows. I think it was going to be called D-411. Eventually, the appeal of the magazine was going to take off with was already in use by another group of people so she dropped it.

Next thing in 2008, I saw that same peculiar face on a hooded sweatshirt she had on and then a Facebook group called HappyFacez. Went unto the group page, and there were photos of tees and hooded tees with the smiley face printed. In 2009, she turns it up a notch…new brilliant designs, concepts and smileys. HappyFacez did an official launch in August 2009; and released more tees, more hooded tees plus new additions: polos and hooded sweat shirts.

I attended the event (as seen in this candid photograph with her) and of course, bought one of her products – a polo shirt.

and modeled in it a little later.

She’s enterprising and always on the go. It is 2010, and this summer she graduated from clothing into beverages with the introduction of Fluid with its a mini bar underway for business in December! She’s living the dream whilst constantly redefining it as well. In 4 – 5 years, she will mostly likely have a list of businesses under her belt. In her own words, “Just imagine putting on a HappyFacez polo while Fluid supplies you with every drink of your choice. Great, right?”. That’s her dream & vision; and that is exactly what she does! She’s Baby on ‘Hip on TV’ by day, and CEO Breakthrough Inc. every other time.

Business Profile

Breakthrough Incorporated is the management firm for HappyFacez and Fluid.

I started this
I started HappyFacez Clothing in Lagos, Nigeria in June 2008, but I got more aggressive with it in 2009. FLUID just kicked off in August, 2010. The brand “HappyFacez” started out while I attended University studying for my Masters. During boring lectures, I would draw little happy/smiling faces just to make me feel good. I also would draw some for some of my Colleagues who weren’t having good days. After school and making some money, I started out!

HappyFacez is all about feel good clothing. When you wear the brand you feel so good and just want to be happy especially when you have the logo smiling back at you lol. HappyFacez is all about forever smiles.

Fluid is a different ball game; in the sense that this brand is all about all kinds of drinks. Fluidis a company that supplies alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks of every kind. They meet up their Clients’ demands by delivering drinks to the events. We carter to all events, including birthdays, business meetings, get-togethers and weddings. As the name implies, we are also fluid. We’ll juice up your event(s) anywhere, anytime, anyhow in order to make it a friction-free experience. We’re working on a Fluid Mini Bar, opening December 2010.

I’m driven by
My clients’ reactions to my services. It makes me to work harder and improve quality of the goods and service we provide.

Past Works/Portfolio
• HappyFacez was part of an event tagged ‘Jeans for Genes’, by a charity organization in Lagos, Nigeria. It helped raise money for people living with sickle-cell anaemia as well create awareness on issues associated with the condition.
